Aberfoyle or Aberfoil?

The recommended ride for day one from Callander is a loop around Loch Katrine, deep in the heart of Rob Roy country. While taking the ferry from Stronachlachar for Trossachs Pier is recommended, I think I'll ride the full loop through Aberfoyle and Three Lochs Forest Drive. I'll see the full loch on my ride westward.

Classics Illustrated discussed the planned meeting between Rob Roy and Francis in the glens at the "Clachan of Aberfoil". I've got to check that out.

Good luck charms ready

While on my Raleigh, I ride with a 1971 UK New Penny in my tube repair patch kit for good luck. 1971 is the year the Raleigh was manufactured, and the first year of the New Penny which was introduced for UK currency decimalization.

I've add a 1966 1 shilling Coin (the final year the shilling was minted) to add more good luck. This one is the Scottish version. With decimalization, the Shilling was valued at 5 New Pence for a while (until 1991) until it was removed from circulation.

Here they are, along with patches for the English YHA (Youth Hostel Association) and the SYHA (Scottish Youth Hostel Association).

Scotland - From National Geographic Magazine September 1996

Came across this very cool map today ... I'll try to find the full edition to read the article. Not for my navigation though, but nice topography.

Badges Affixed

While my right side pannier has plenty of patches, the left side had none. Today I affixed some. I use Badge Magic, and have been very pleased with its durability and quality on these 1980's nylon bags.

I found these patches on eBay in the $3 to $5 range. I especially like the old SYHA (Scottish Youth Hostel Association) patch. I also attached a bit of Rob Roy MacGregor tartan to the zippers.

Planning my first Rob Roy encounter

While cycling from Glasgow Airport to Callander the day I arrive, I plan to take a route through Stirling. Looks like I'll want to make a stop at the Rob Roy McGregor Statue on Corn Exchange Road.

Study Guide

I just received a $4.00 used copy of Sir Walter Scott's Rob Roy ... this edition was printed in 1995. I'll start reading it, but I'll save the ending for on-the-trail entertainment. I see my route takes me to Rob Roy's grave site at the Balquhidder Parish Church. Perhaps I'll read a few paragraphs at the churchyard?
